The Natural Heritage Foundation and the Salla tourism industry launched the Salla Nature Credit Campaign in February, with the purpose of buying, protecting and restoring a diverse forest area in Southern Salla along the Oulanka River. In the protected area, restoration workshops are open to everyone and will be organized on Tuesday, September 5. from 2 pm.

During the Salla’s Nature Credit Campaign, tourists, local residents, companies or tour operators who bring tourists to the area can take part in protecting the local nature in a completely new way. Through the campaign, it is possible to direct your donation to the protection of the local forest and even to the protection of a specific type of forest or swamp. On the Natural Heritage Foundation’s campaign page, the donor can choose, for example, an old forest, a forest to be restored, a growing forest or a floodplain.

The conservation campaign has had a great start in terms of donations, and this fall, restoration projects will be organized on the site, where everyone can directly be involved by putting their shovels in the ground to promote nature conservation. The goal of the workshops is to block the ditches that were once dug on the swamp, to restore the sedge bog and thereby improve the habitat of the endangered Oulankajoki trout, among other things.

The event starts in Salla’s Hautajärvi village at the Napapiiri Cafe at 12 noon. There is an opportunity to learn more about the importance of biodiversity, Salla’s Nature Credit Campaign and the protected area in the form of short informational presentations. Information will be presented by professor Mikko Sipilä from the Värriö research station, Petri Haapala and Ari-Pekka Auvinen from the Natural Heritage Foundation, and the chairman of Matkalle Sallaan ry and entrepreneur Sara Virkkula. Napapiiri Cafe also offers a luch for a small cost. After the restoration instructions, the journey continues with shared transportation to the Salla Nature Credit site in Jokiaho.

Registrations are requested for the event in order to organize shared transportation and to know how much soot pan coffee needs to be ordered on August 29. You can register by emailing tourist.info@salla.fi. Media representatives are warmly welcome to the event.
